Historical informations
This coin was minted in the 10th century, in the kingdoms of Northumbria and East Anglia, then under the occupation of the leader Olaf (Anlaf) Guthfrithsson.
The bird represented, surely a raven, is associated with the god Odin among the Vikings, but also with Saint Ostwald or Saint John the Evangelist. This reflects the mix of cultures within the Danelaw, and the cohabitation of the two religions.
