Historical informations

Tiberius III Apsimar (Greek: Τιβέριος Γʹ Ἀψίμαρος) was a Byzantine emperor and usurper who reigned from February 15, 698 to August 21, 705.
Little is known about his early life, except he was coming from a Byzantine theme encompassing the southern coasts of Asia Minor, and that his name was then Apsimar. In 696, his army commanded by John the Patrician was sent by Emperor Leontius to retake the city of Carthage, capital of the exarchate of Africa which had been conquered by the Umayyad Arabs. However, as soon as the city was taken, the army had to retreat and take refuge in the island of Crete. Some officers, fearing the anger of the emperor, killed John the Patrice and acclaimed Apsimar as emperor.

Apsimar then took the name Tiberius and, rather than seeking to reconquer Carthage, achieved various successes against the Arabs on the eastern border of the empire. In 705, the deposed emperor Justinian II came at the head of an army made up of Slavs and Bulgarians to retake Constantinople. Tiberius had to flee to Bithynia where he was caught several months later and executed between August 705 and February 706. His body was initially thrown into the sea, but was found and buried in a church on the island of Prote (today hui Kınalıada one of the nine islands constituting the Princes' Islands archipelago in the Sea of Marmara).
