Historical informations
Tiberius III Apsimar (Greek: Τιβέριος Γʹ Ἀψίμαρος) was a Byzantine emperor and usurper who reigned from February 15, 698 to August 21, 705.
Little is known about his early life, except he was coming from a Byzantine theme encompassing the southern coasts of Asia Minor, and that his name was then Apsimar. In 696, his army commanded by John the Patrician was sent by Emperor Leontius to retake the city of Carthage, capital of the exarchate of Africa which had been conquered by the Umayyad Arabs. However, as soon as the city was taken, the army had to retreat and take refuge in the island of Crete. Some officers, fearing the anger of the emperor, killed John the Patrice and acclaimed Apsimar as emperor.
