The sword comes from a high status tomb known as Tomb II (C28026). Tomb II was opened in the spring of 1878. Like so many other ancient tombs, Tomb II was opened by uninformed people and the grave goods might have been lost without the arrival of the head of the antiquities collection, Oluf Rygh, in Snartemo. this autumn. Tomb II contained a fully decorated high-ranking tomb which contained, among other things, the magnificent sword, clasp buttons, shield, spear, bronze cauldrons, belt with girdle stone, glass goblet of the Frankish empire and the remains of expensive and magnificent textiles.

As Tomb II was located in the middle of the Snartemos plain and only less than 50 meters from Tomb V, it is not impossible that these two tombs belonged to close people. They undoubtedly belonged to the same social stratum. With this museum copy of the sword, we hope to highlight that there are several finds that testify to the central place of Agder in the migratory period. The period of migration was the golden age of Agder, the period when contacts with the outside world were strong, communities began to form, written language arrived and above all; that some people started to take power.

The language of the decoration of the sword is characterized by animal motifs, known as the Salin 1 style. It is a style which characterizes the period of migration to Agder. The style is characterized by several different animals such as birds, horses and much more. Animals helped give power and strength to objects and the people who carried them.
