This shroud of Byzantine origin is without doubt one of the most famous. Its dating is not however facilitated. Some people claim that this shroud dates from the 11th century while others place it around the 10th, or even the 11th century based on the weaving technique used, called "lampas".

The original fragment has large dimensions: 89cm high by 135cm long.

This shroud comes from the reliquary of Saint-Siviard, fifth abbot of Saint-Calais, died in 687. His remains were first stored in a villa, on the site of the current village of Saint-Georges-de-la -Couée, in Sarthe region, France. A document from Charlemagne, dated 774, informs us that the abbot's remains were then moved to Sens at the dawn of the Norman invasions. Today, this fabric is stored in the treasure of the cathedral of Sens.
Description: Large medallions, decorated with pearls and palmettes enclose a griffin. This animal of oriental origin has become a great classic in the Byzantine iconographic bestiary, and symbolizes strength and power. The weaving technique used makes it possible to obtain different textures at various places in the design, further accentuating the contrast and the finesse of the representation.
The floral ornamentation of the Saint-Siviard shroud medallions is very close to that of the "elephant fabric" kept in the treasury museum of Aachen Cathedral. It is highly likely that these two pieces come from the same workshop - surely imperial - and are contemporary to each other. Note also that, according to some specialists, the shroud of Saint-Siviard, like many others, was originally a religious - or an aristocratic - garment.
