Historical description

This brocade silk was produced into Byzantines workshops, most probably between 800-900 AD.
Original artifact now stored at the "Museo Sacro", Italy.

The decoration represents a hunting scene, as in many Byzantine silk brocades. Thus, this brocade is similar to the so-called "Bahram Gur" copies although it is of a slightly different type.
This brocade was undoubtedly very popular at the beginning of the Middle Ages:
We have indeed exhumed, during archaeological excavations, fragments of this brocade in Scandinavia, on the Viking site of Oseberg.
Another fragment is kept in the Muséo Sacro in the Vatican.
This brocade will be suitable for both a Byzantine reenactor, a Viking, see a Carolingian, since Northern Italy was under Carolingian domination / influence at the beginning of the 9th century.
