Historical informations

This coin was minted during the reign of Michael III, who lived between 840 and 867 AD and ruled the Byzantine Empire.
Portrayed by Arab sources as a powerful and wise ruler and a good military leader. During his reign, the Byzantine economy was doing well, although some Byzantine authors depict the emperor as being more interested in drunkenness and chariot racing than in internal affairs.
