Historical description:
The "bocle" / "buckler" is a small round shield 30-40 cm in diameter, used in medieval times as well as in the Renaissance. It was used in particular to protect the left hand of the fighter, often left vulnerable by his main weapon. The buckle was favored in a civilian context because it was light, compact and therefore easily transportable. From the 13th to the 15th century, the pair of one-handed sword and buckler therefore constitutes an extremely frequent combination, and very present in iconographic and textual sources.
