Historical informations

Minted during the reign of Louis The Pious, first half of the 9th century. Dorestad is the name of one of the most important ports in early Middle Ages Europe, which experienced its golden age during the 9th century. Dorestad is located on one of the arms of the mouth of the Rhine, on the remains of an ancient Roman fort, in a place near the current town of Wijk bij Duurstede, in the Netherlands.
Between 600 and 850, the port was often affected by the Franco-Frisian War. Within the Carolingian Empire, Dorestad was a personal possession of Charlemagne, like Quentovic in France. These two cities managed most of the maritime traffic of the Carolingians.
Due to its strategic and commercial importance, Dorestadt was the target of numerous Viking incursions.
