Birka armor (embossed plates) -Viking - 9/10 century
Armor description
Armor from Birka, after archaeological dig sketches of plates, exhumed at the Birka emporium. Viking, 9-10th century.
In Scandinavia, the examples of lamellar armor remain few. There are some in Birka. Lamellaes were scattered around the Khazar garrison of Birka. More than 700 lamellae were exhumed. They have been classified into different types, which probably correspond to several different types of armor and / or different areas of the body.
This Birka armor, according to fragments found on the site, probably comes from Central Asia, or the Middle East. A fairly close example is that of Baylik-Sook, from Altai.
