Aureus, minted during the reign of Aurelian, in Milan, around 270-275 AD. Laureate and armored bust right Mars walking right, holding a spear and a trophy, a captive seated at his feet.
Aurelian was Roman emperor from 270 to 275 CE. He was one of the so-called barrack emperors (or soldier emperors), chosen by the Roman army during the turbulent period known as the Crisis of the 3rd Century (235–284 CE).
He was an emperor primarily focused on the military aspect of the management of the empire. Renowned as ruthless on the battlefield, and during his military campaigns.
