Historical informations

Athelstan is the first ruler to be recognized as King of all England. He's the first English king to be depicted on a coin, wearing a crown.
Under Æthelstan's reign, the kingdom's government became more centralized: he exercised greater control over the production of laws and frequently summoned important figures from peripheral regions to his councils. Foreign kings, notably Welsh, also attended these councils, testimony to their submission to Æthelstan. His diplomatic activity extended throughout Europe, notably through the marriage of his sisters to several sovereigns of the continent. A large quantity of legal texts from his reign survives: his legislative reforms are based on those of his grandfather Alfred the Great and demonstrate his concern about violations of the law and the threats they pose to the social order. Æthelstan was also a devout king, a renowned collector of relics, and founder of churches. Its court became one of the main centers of knowledge in the country, announcing the Benedictine reform at the end of the century.
