The theme of the wild boar is recurrent in Central Asia, throughout the early Middle Ages.
Declined in multiple versions, the stylization is sometimes pushed to the extreme, but the wild boar is always visible at first glance.
A universal symbol of strength, this wild boar motif is visible on brocade silk, but also frescoes and pottery, from the confines of Central Asia to Eastern Europe, within Avar tombs.
According to Friederich Spuhler, the wild boar could be a symbol of royalty. The wild boar motif is also popular in Sassanid art, from which comes the famous "Bahram Gur" motif so often declined in the Middle Ages.
